 Anthem

Anthem (Noun)  A song of praise (to God or to a saint or to a nation)

I am so fortunate to have found the perfect horse to help me continue my dressage education.  Anthem is a 15 year old bay Dutch Warmblood gelding standing 16+ hands.  He was previously shown through I-1with scores in the mid-60s.  So he has the training to teach me and hopefully the patience to deal with me while I learn!  Since he has not been in training for over a year, we will both be getting back into show shape together.   It will be a wonderful experience to have my own FEI schoolmaster in my backyard.

Anthem and I have started our weekly lessons with Karmen Mills.  Its always a challenge with a schoolmaster - they know everything, you know nothing - how do you transfer that knowledge?  Thankfully, he has proven to be a patient teacher so far.   Anthem's gaits are so different from my previous horses - but his gorgeous trot is what attracted me to him in the first place.

I have been having so much fun learning movements I have never done before. I really like his canter and have been playing with changes across the diagonal and canter pirouettes.   In August, Anthem and I attended our first real clinic with "S" judge Mike Osinski.   Anthem was his usual self - hard working and dependable.  Mike was sure to point out that he did every single thing I asked of him.  He tries so hard Mike called him an over-achiever!  I am hoping we will be ready for a fourth level test for the schooling show at the end of September.  That will help us get ready for the *real* shows next year!

Dressage is a journey in partnership. Anthem and I have many miles to travel together and this is only the beginning.  I only hope I can become as good a rider as he is a horse.
